X-ray FAQ

What is an X-ray?2023-06-26T15:21:50+00:00

X-rays are a form of electromagnetic radiation, similar to visible light, except you can’t see them. Unlike light, however, x-rays have higher energy and can pass through most objects, including the body. Medical x-rays are used to generate images of tissues and structures inside the body.

How are x-rays made?2023-06-26T15:22:12+00:00

Our x-rays are produced in an x-ray tube by accelerating electrons from a tube filament. The electrons are directed to a tungsten target. The radiographer can alter the voltage and current settings on the machine, manipulating the x-ray beam properties produced. Different x-ray beam energies are used for different body parts.

Are X-rays safe?2023-06-26T15:23:09+00:00

While any form of ionizing radiation can interact with your body, we use the ALARA principle. ALARA stands for “as low as reasonably achievable”. ALARA means avoiding exposure to radiation that does not have a direct benefit to you, even if the dose is small.  Our technologists are trained to ensure your exam is completed as safely as possible.  With digital imaging, X-ray doses used are smaller than ever.

Do X-rays cause pain? 2023-06-26T15:23:42+00:00

The X-ray beam itself is painless.  You may experience some discomfort if the body part being imaged is injured and we have to position it in a certain way.  We will take care and try to make the exam as painless as possible.

Is there any preparation for my x-ray?2023-06-26T15:24:08+00:00

There is no preparation required.  You may be asked to change into a gown (depending on the exam).

Can someone come in the room with me?2023-06-26T15:24:26+00:00

Due to the nature of X-rays (Ionizing Radiation), it is best that no one is in the room with you during the exposure.  If absolutely required (eg for assistance to hold steady, we will provide lead aprons to the supporting individual).
